Dealing with moments of stress
Method of work
- You bring with you a passage of music that causes you stress
- You will be given all sorts of exercises, some of them seeming illogical
- This will focus your attention dramatically
- The result is a real and appreciable improvement after completing each exercise
We all know the feeling: certain passages in a piece of music which we never seem to make our own, which we worry about all the time, especially when leading up to a performance or an exam.
You cannot ignore something like that, the problem only gets bigger and it will have an adverse affect on your concentration or overall interpretation of the piece. You might then make a mistake or you begin to struggle and your concentration lags behind. You are not properly focussed and you are therefore not producing an optimal result. This will not escape the notice of the listener/audience/jury, whose concentration may well suffer as a result too.
The fact is that your own unimpaired concentration will bring about an unbroken flow of power to your interpretation and thus to the concentration of your listeners.
It is very important to neutralize as much as possible the areas of stress, for they will hinder your performance by preventing your being at one with your music.
These lessons can be combined with Mental Training.
