Ellen van Lelyveld studied piano and composition at the Sweelink Conservatory in Amsterdam under Hans Dercksen, Alexandre Hrisanide and Ton de Leeuw. She passed her piano examination in 1978. She also studied Psychology at the University of Amsterdam and Graphic Design at the Rietveld Academy of Art in Amsterdam.
In the years following this formal education, Ellen took courses in Hypnotherapy, Psychosynthesis and Effective Intuition, in order to specialize further in the mental aspect of making music. This background formed a base upon which she later developed her Integrated Practice System.
From 1996 to 1999, at the conservatory in Zwolle, Ellen coordinated a project entitled ‘Personal Instrument’, which had to do with posture, movement and mental training. Within the context of this project, she designed a Mental Training course for music students.
